Take a minute to read this editorial from an award winning NYSUT United teacher. The question is fundamental to who we are as a state and a society. Do we want teachers or do we want technicians?

“How has she influenced you?”
“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”

11 Black icons you won’t hear about on MLK Jr. day — but absolutely should

In honor of a holiday that has come to represent the spirit of the civil rights movement, we’ve compiled a list of the heroes you probably won’t hear about on Monday. These are the people who marched in the streets of Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, side by side with King, who delivered inspiring speeches about civil rights and ending racial oppression, icons who, in their distinct way, expanded King’s vision of “the revolution for human rights” to include women and queer people.

The names you should commit to memory

In honor of MLK Jr. day I’ll be reading into other civil rights icons, both on this list and beyond. -Tajha

For the first time in at least 50 years, a majority of U.S. public school students come from low-income families, according to a new analysis of 2013 federal data, a statistic that has profound implications for the nation.

The Southern Education Foundation reports that 51 percent of students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in the 2012-2013 school year were eligible for the federal program that provides free and reduced-price lunches. The lunch program is a rough proxy for poverty, but the explosion in the number of needy children in the nation’s public classrooms is a recent phenomenon that has been gaining attention among educators, public officials and researchers.

The Rev. William Barber, who established Moral Mondays in North Carolina, brought the movement to New York for a Jan. 12 rally in Albany. He spoke passionately about the moral duty to right the wrong done to hundreds of thousands of New York state children who go without the high-quality education that is their constitutional right.

Grief is a fact of life in our nation’s schools; 7 out of 10 teachers have a student currently in their classroom who is grieving, according to research by the New York Life Foundation and the American Federation of Teachers.

“Virtually all children will go through it — but that doesn’t mean it’s a normalizing experience,” says Dr. David Schonfeld, an expert on student grief and a driving force behind the new website GrievingStudents.org. “Even though it’s common, it warrants our attention.”
