The Worst Trade Deal You Never Heard Of

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, now headed to Congress, is a product of big corporations and Wall Street, seeking to circumvent regulations protecting workers, consumers, and the environment. Watch this video, and say “no” to fast-tracking this bad deal for the vast majority of Americans.

The Oregon School Employees Association is supporting state legislation that would gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour. About 65 OSEA members from all over the state rallied and marched on Jan. 24, joining a crowd of about 500 at the Capitol in Salem, because raising the wage would lift thousands of Oregon families out of poverty.

“There are many reasons for us to increase Oregon’s minimum wage. In fact, there are 200,000 reasons—that’s the number of Oregon children who live in households below the federal poverty line,” OSEA President and AFT Vice President Tim Stoelb told the crowd. “The majority of OSEA members work in K-12 schools. Our members see the struggle of working families to make ends meet reflected in the faces of their students every day. I stand before you to ask all Oregonians to demand an end to an employer’s ability to legally pay poverty wages.” (OSEA photos)

Dear Supporter,

We are dedicated teachers working at ASPIRA charter schools in Philadelphia.  We have been striving to form a union at our schools to help us better advocate for our students and ourselves.  In order to ensure our effort to have more input in our school is successful, we need your help.

We are proud to be a part of ASPIRA; an organization which has dedicated itself to helping the communities of North Philadelphia since 1969. ASPIRA’s mission has been to bring unity and empowerment to the community, to instill in each citizen a sense of value and self-worth. The staff at ASPIRA is asking for that same respect and support as we exercise our legal right to form a union.

We deserve a peaceful and unobstructed pathway to union recognition free from threats, intimidation, and the waste of valuable resources. Our success in the classroom requires that ASPIRA value us as professionals and include our voices in decisions that affect our students and community.

Please stand with us in asking ASPIRA to respect our decision to form a union.

 Respectfully yours,

Hanako Franz, Olney Charter High School

Elizabeth Kim, John B. Stetson Middle School

In honor of National School Choice Week, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, we wanted to pass on a few ideas why school vouchers are bad public policy. If this “quiz” isn’t bad enough, read on.

In a more serious vein, the Washington Post’s Valerie Strauss poses five key questions to ask about charter schools.

As Toledo, Ohio, has become a major center of child-sex trafficking, local teacher and union vice president Mona Al-Hayani has developed training and spread awareness about the issue to her fellow educators. “Often, people think that kids who are trafficked are always kidnapped,” Al-Hayani says. In fact, these kids are often still going to school. (Photo by Madalyn Ruggiero.)
