And am I teacher, or a technician? -
Take a minute to read this editorial from an award winning NYSUT United teacher. The question is fundamental to who we are as a state and a society. Do we want teachers or do we want technicians?
Definitely one of the top moments of last night’s speech.

“Who’s influenced you the most in your life?”
“My principal, Ms. Lopez.”
“How has she influenced you?”
“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”

Grief is a fact of life in our nation’s schools; 7 out of 10 teachers have a student currently in their classroom who is grieving, according to research by the New York Life Foundation and the American Federation of Teachers.
“Virtually all children will go through it — but that doesn’t mean it’s a normalizing experience,” says Dr. David Schonfeld, an expert on student grief and a driving force behind the new website GrievingStudents.org. “Even though it’s common, it warrants our attention.”
